This week we continued studying the example of Gideon and how he learned to count on God. We have been talking about the sanctification process and how Gideon was set apart. This week we focused on the second part of sanctification which is the transformation of Gideon’s character to be more like Christ. We looked at the principle of sowing and reaping (Gal. 6:7-8) represented throughout Gideon’s story and how it relates to bearing fruit, noting that we can either sow in the spirit or in the flesh. Those are our only two choices. To sow to the spirit and bear fruit that will remain we must abide (Jn. 15). As Kathy stated, you can’t tune in to an AM station using your FM radio. It just won’t work. As we abide in Christ we receive wisdom from above and we learn to walk with God in our daily lives. Kathy also pointed out the importance of being willing to be weak. Why? 1) So that we can know the God of the impossible 2) That is the path God has chosen (1 Cor. 1:27) 3) We want more of God.
How encouraging it was to look at this account of Gideon! He had heard great things about God but had never truly experienced God in his own life. When he found himself in the presence of the Angel of God he naturally had questions and doubts. How sweet the patience of God as we see His faithfulness to Gideon to answer his questions and prove Himself time and time again. We truly see Gideon transform into the valiant warrior God called him to be. And then to see that Gideon’s name later appears in the faith hall of fame! That certainly strengthens my spirit and encourages me to rest more securely in the arms of my Savior.
